Pupils from Brook House, St Francis de Sales and Devonshire Hill Primary Schools came together on March 8 2018 at Tottenham Green Leisure Centre to try out new sports at the SportInspired Games.

Building a strong and healthy community with more opportunities for young people to take part in sport is a key aim of the council and its partners. The SportInspired Games is a festival of sport organised by social enterprise SportInspired and supported by Lendlease and Haringey Council. Lendlease is a supporter of the Tottenham Charter.

Volunteers and coaches from Haringey’s community sports clubs gave children a taste of six sports – street dance, boxing, dodgeball, athletics, basketball and the Paralympics sport, boccia. Students from Duke’s Aldridge Academy also acted as young leaders at the event, tutoring younger pupils and organising sessions. The enthusiastic pupils were encouraged to take up the sports that they enjoyed after the event.

Carole Pridmore from LendLease said: “It was honestly the best event I’ve attended involving schools. The kids loved every minute and I also enjoyed having a go at a few new sports!”

Tracey Edghill Tottenham Charter Development Manager said “I thoroughly enjoyed volunteering and the young people had such a great experience participating in multiple sports, team work, leadership, confidence and self-esteem skills all in a fun and positive environment. There was so much buzz and energy in the room, well done and congratulations to a fantastic event!”

One of the participants David, aged 13 from Duke’s Aldridge Academy said: “I’m one of the leaders. SportInspired came to our school and explained it, and it sounded really good so I came here to gain leadership skills and learn to be more confident and be more responsible. My job today is to help the kids be excited about what they’re doing and give them the confidence to try different sports even if they think they might not like it. I’ve learnt you can’t just say you don’t like something without trying it. You’ve got to give it a go!”
